Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often challenge each other. He had access into a number of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
