Gus Hansen enjoyed an amazing year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only player to make it to the last table in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker recorded history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen secured a big pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest bettors around the world. While gambling on web poker, another side of Hansen has appeared. He regularly participates in the 200/400 No Limit max buy-in of $40, 000. Gus usually buys in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He waits for a good hand and then goes all-in. I believe Gus is an excellent poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless he is penniless, he has absolutely no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy-in.

Buying in for the min takes a majority of the skill out of deep stack poker. Hansen is accepted to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the total dollar value. I think television can alter our view of the real world at times. The best poker players anywhere in the world might just be guys you have won’t have heard of. Gus can be found betting on net poker on Full Tilt. He commonly plays in high stakes omaha high and hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he back up his skills in cash rounds?
