Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on the game.
The real advancement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would often wager against one another. Howard had access into some of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world today. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
